Gulfstream x SCADpro

Venture System

Guided by Dator’s Law which states “Any useful idea about the future should appear to be ridiculous,” the SCADpro team made of students from 11 majors and 7 countries addressed the future of aviation.

The final solution, Venture System, is a multi-faceted approach to these problems that harnesses the power of advanced predictive AI. Venture’s AI system, affectionately referred to as F.E.L.I.X., powers the learning capabilities of the Venture pod, a portable simulator device. In addition to futuristic technology such as holograms and haptic tech, Venture also connects novice pilots with experienced mentors to help guide them as they gain more experience in such a technical and demanding field.

UX Problem

Problem

Aviation is a specialized field with extensive databases of technical information. As a pilot shortage bears down on the industry, by 2030 new pilots often enter the flight deck with less practical experience. At the same time, pilots seek training that is cost-effective, efficient, personalized, and most importantly, safe.

Target Users

Generation Z Pilots in 2030

How might we...

  • train future pilots?

  • present information in a more visually intuitive manner?

  • create a professional community for pilots to interact?

  • provide an all-in-one application?

  • adapt technology to make the flight deck more intuitive?

  • provide a personalized learning experience for pilots?

  • protect pilots’ privacy?

System Overview

When creating Venture, the team understood the final solution had to include aspects of training, professional development, and socialization. The approach to incorporate these features revolves around the insights that both Generation Z and current pilots are craving personalization and customization in their work and learning. Venture is the name to this innovative system of solutions.

To interact with Venture, an AI component named F.E.L.I.X. — Flight Evolved Learning Integrated Matrix — was designed. F.E.L.I.X. is the centralized access point to the system and is responsible for personalizing and directing all learning and interactions of users.

Venture System

The Venture System delivers multiple benefits through a series of products. These include a Venture Pod that employs projection and holographic technology and Venture Glasses that read holographic wireframes. The product team created prototypes of these deliverables that together, create an amazingly realistic environment for training simulation, as well as provide a fully immersive AR/VR experience.

The Venture Glasses can also be used independently, allowing for hands free communication and screen sharing. Both of these products were designed with the on-the-go lifestyle of pilots in mind.

F.E.L.I.X. guides pilots through customized training scenarios. To tailor each experience, content is presented to a user based on their background, area of study, and learning style. For example, the persona, Ralph, wants to practice his landing in the G650, and because F.E.L.I.X. knows he is a senior pilot with a military background, he won’t start from the beginning of the course and will only be shown exercises that pertain to his needs.

Flight Simulations

One of the primary features and advantages of Venture is its training capability. To illustrate this, a flight simulation that shows how the persona ‘Katie: Pilot of the Future’ would interact with F.E.L.I.X. during a flight training exercise was rendered.

In the image below, you can see how the Venture Pod projects a holographic screen to interact with content. The screens below and to the right represent these projections and interactions.

The welcome screen is personalized to Katie and her training. She can access lessons, simulations that utilize haptic technology, note taking tools, and a community of pilots.

Technology today enables you to have a thousand libraries at your fingertips. In the future, we might have educational VR or AR. Who knows?

As Katie undergoes simulations, F.E.L.I.X. (as represented by the glowing triangle) offers advice and corrections during the scenario. This immediate feedback is an effective tool for novice pilots to have mistakes quickly corrected.

A variety of simulation scenarios can be practiced from anywhere with the use of the Venture Pod.
